The IEEE Global Initiative on Ethics of Autonomous and Intelligent Systems) is launching the second version of Ethically Aligned Design: A Vision for Prioritizing Human Well-being with Autonomous and Intelligent Systems, (EADv2) the most comprehensive, crowd-sourced global treatise regarding the Ethics of Autonomous and Intelligent Systems available today.

Augmented Reality (AR) is a technology that integrates digital content of all kinds — e.g., 3D objects, audio, information overlays — with a person’s physical world. Currently, AR often achieves its effect by using mobile devices, but this limited approach is being superseded by new visor-like headsets that provide a wide field of view, higher resolution, and hands-free, always-on functionality. At this point in AR’s development, many useful applications are in vertical markets, but the trends point to AR evolving into a mass-market technology over the next several years. The IEEE-SA is deeply involved in this exciting area, and the SA’s Innovation Space provides a convenient one-stop location describing the various AR-related projects at the SA.

Raise IEEE influence and profile in global technology policy in the areas of internet governance, cybersecurity and cyber privacy policy development by providing a consensus of sound technical and scientific knowledge and guidance to the process.

IC17-010 IEEE-SA Automotive Emerging Technology Initiative will provide a platform that brings together the global technical community working across these automotive industry topics in a collaborative environment to share knowledge, discuss issues and identify standards related solutions to drive innovation and accelerate emerging technology adoption.

IC15_003 Smart City Compliance Indicators activity is to come up with a definition of a Smart City and the factors that determine the ‘smartness’ of a city. We will first identify the ‘indicators of smartness’ that are must for a city to be called as a smart city. Based on these indicators and their impact on the overall environment of the city we will develop a rating index. The final deliverable will be a white paper on Smart City that would include key indicators and rating index that would qualify a city to a smart city.

This activity provides a multi-stream effort to address the design implications and technology implementations with a unique, core focus on the development of the immersive environment that will impact all present and future Digital Citizens:

  • Wireless Wearable Testbed (WWT)
  • Wearable to clinical data stream optimization
  • Expand the digital journey beyond PAN/WAN
  • Develop a blockchain communication protocol with 360 data perspective
  • Consider implementation challenges on a global front in a future city environment (such as GDPR and PSK2)
  • Harmonization and coordination with other IEEE and industry initiatives (such as 5G and IoT)
  • Support education, outreach and interoperability events

This activity will address multiple facets of patient and consumer safety, as well as supply chain and clinical trials optimization:  

  • Provide the capacity to utilizing emerging technologies such as blockchain to optimize and secure food, medical device and drug supply chains to combat the rising risk of counterfeits and better authenticate the source of the products
  • Engage and create a community of pharmaceutical executives for the IEEE
  • Explore the use of blockchain technology to reduce the cost while maintaining compliance with regulatory agencies’ guidance on track and trace and clinical trials
  • Exploring capabilities for interoperability on the supply chain to respond to the emerging dynamics around personalized medicine and additive manufacturing
    (i.e. 3D Printing)
  • Develop a framework for standards for blockchain to efficiently interoperate with legacy track/trace, ERP and EDI systems currently utilized by organizations
  • Facilitate a more inclusive platform for patient engagement for clinical trials utilizing distributed ledger technologies, AI and wearables/sensors

Under the umbrella of collaboration and consensus, the IEEE-SA has technologists, academics, and industry executives together to build consensus and develop a framework towards solutions that facilitate digital inclusion, trust, personal data agency and security for all members of the global community.

To best advance the goal of designing and developing trust-enabling solutions for the global community, DITA seeks to cultivate and influence the key groups in the online ecosystem to:

  • Have agency over our data and cyber-identity
  • Provide the capacity to identify ourselves online in a way that protects our privacy, our right to be forgotten, and our off-line ability to have multiple personas
  • Give a voice to the underserved and vulnerable with the creation of standards that are inclusive of their needs
  • Encourage distributed ledger technology (e.g., Blockchain) standards that facilitate financial inclusion and other decentralized data sharing capabilities
  • Develop a collaborative approach to technology and policy design regarding digital inclusion, trust, personal data, agency, security and privacy for all demographics

This activity will focus on the selection of the labs for the testing, analysis and publication of the results, identification of the ambiguities and gaps in the standard and related test procedures, generation of additional use cases, and broader industry engagement with the goal of the acceleration of the adoption of the IEEE 1901.1TM standard during its development and after the publication. Potential outputs include:

  • List of approved labs
  • Analysis of test results
  • Identification of the ambiguities and gaps in the standard and related test procedures
  • Additional use cases, industry workshops, and forums
